New Video from Rebel Diaz & Dead Prez, Quite Possibly the Dopest Shit Ever

Rebel Diaz, a radical hip-hop group straight out of the Bronx, just dropped a brand new video in time for Mayday this year, and we at The Rebel Beat just can’t stop watching it.

A little description from the group:

We are living historic moments of oppression, to which the people have the right to respond with historic moments of resistance. The Which Side Are You On REMIX came out on our Radical Dilemma album, but the time is NOW for the song and the message it represents. It was an honor to link with Dead Prez and the comrade Rakaa Iriscience of Dilated Peoples, artists whose shoulders we stand on, who have paved the way for a Rebel Diaz. From #Baltimore to #Ferguson to #Chicago to #TheSouthBronx to #LosAngeles and beyond.. #WhichSideAreYouOn?!

Enjoy!

The Rebel Beat Podcast 009 – Linton Kwesi Johnson, Dub Poetry, and Black Resistance

lintonKwesiJohnson-1

Boom! Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat, your regular dose of revolutionary music across different genres, and class war on the dance floor.

This week on the show, our special guest is the legendary British-Jamaican dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. Johnson hails from Clarendon, Jamaica, but immigrated to the UK in the early 60’s. From there, he got deeply involved in the Jamaican and Black diasporic reggae scenes, as well as political organizing at a time of fervent racial oppression in England. LKJ pioneered the genre of dub poetry, or dub lyricism, which combines Jamaican patois spoken word with deep reggae and dub grooves. His music amplifies the voices of Black youth who were clashing with police in the streets, and demanding dignified lives. Continue reading

Boom! We’re back with another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat from your people-powered station, CKUT in Montreal!

This week on the show, we are very happy to bring you an interview with M-1 of the legendary hip hop group Dead Prez. This is essentially Take 2 of our conversation, because as some of you may know, we were supposed to interview M-1 in Montreal back in January, when he was scheduled to perform for the Fro Foundation’s Black History Month series. But then, the racist colonial border guards refused his entry into Canada. And that was that. Although, M-1 still addressed the crowd in Montreal via skype, and we aired that address on Podcast #001 of The Rebel Beat. Continue reading

Welcome back to our weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat – your weekly dose of music that promotes the flogging of bosses, the running out of town of racists, and class war on the dancefloor.

We have a very special podcast for you this week, because we were graced in the studio by our friend and comrade DJ Neil Kastro. Neil is a long-time anti-capitalist community organizer who hails from the uptown Filipino community in Cote-des-Neiges, Montreal, and is also the host of Sigaw Ng Bayan, a weekly Filipino radio show heard every Friday from 2-3pm on CKUT. On top of that, he’s also a super talented musician, MC, and DJ. Neil brought in a nice selection of Filipino hip-hop directly from the Philippines, as well as from the diaspora. Continue reading

We’re back for another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! On this edition, it’s our monthly collaboration with the mighty Submedia, who are bringing anarchist video badassery to new levels.

March 15th is coming up, which is the International Day Against Police Brutality. The day was actually started back in 1997 by the Collective Opposed to Police Brutality in Montreal, as well as the Black Flag anarchist group in Switzerland. Since then, it has been an occasion for survivors and families of victims of police brutality, anarchists, anti-capitalists, and other rebels to manifest their resistance to the pigs. TRIGGER WARNING: Some of the songs we play on this podcast deal with issues like rape and sexual assault in a very explicit way.

This one is our International Women’s Day special, which is coming up on March 8th, and is a day to celebrate struggles against patriarchy around the world. Women, queers, trans folks, sex workers, Indigenous communities, mothers and girls are all standing up and kicking ass in such beautiful ways, and we wanted to honour that on the podcast this week.

Boom! Here we go! Podcast #002 of The Rebel Beat. On this week’s podcast, we continue our Black History Month series, looking at the recent inspiring uprisings in Black communities against police brutality and impunity.

This podcast also marks the beginning of a regular collaboration we’ll be doing with the long-running badass anarchist video collective Submedia.TV. Unfortunately their adorable disembodied head, The Stimulator, aka Frank, couldn’t be with us in studio for this show, but we caught up with him by phone during a high-speed police car chase. Despite being indisposed by the fuzz, he still managed to provide some dope tracks here, as well as an interview with former political prisoner of the Black Liberation Army, the anarchist panther, Ashanti Alston. Check out the full video of the interview at the bottom of the show notes! Continue reading
