The Rebel Beat 082: Burn Down Babylon with Maddie Ruthless and The Far East

We’re back with another monthly edition of The Rebel Beat, a Firebrand Records podcast, and your purveyors of class war on the dance floor, each and every moon cycle.

Our special guest on the podcast this time around is Maddie Ruthless, the front woman of the band The Far East. The Far East hail from Brooklyn, NY, and play a blend of unapologetic reggae that is as sultry as it is hard-edged.

We spoke with Maddie about the radical, anti-imperialist and anti-racist message of reggae, being a woman in the music scene, anti-fascist music in the age of Trump, AND touring with 2-tone ska legends The Specials.

Do you enjoy The Rebel Beat? Then support us! Consider throwing us even as little as $1/month. It helps a lot!

He was an early member of 90s rap groups War Party and Team Rezofficial, before finally setting in on a solo career. His latest album is called F.O.E.=Family Over Everything, and we talked with HellnBack about his long career in the game, the importance of family, and using hip-cover170x170hop as a tool of resistance to fight back against suicide and depression. The Rebel Beat Podcast 046 – Rafeef Ziadah on teaching life and liberation

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! This week, we are thrilled to bring you one of the fiercest poetic voices of the Palestinian liberation movement – Rafeef Ziadah. Rafeef is a Palestinian refugee who has committed her life’s work to the liberation of her people. She is a leading organizer in the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israeli apartheid.

I actually met Rafeef for the first time ever at the conference to launch the BDS movement in Canada in Toronto in 2006. She is a powerful and energetic orator, which usually makes for a badass organizer.

On top of her day-to-day activism, Rafeef is also an amazing poet and spoken word artist. She recently released her second full-length album, “We Teach Life“, which once again beautifully combines her political poetry with music. On this album, she teamed up with Australian-Palestinian musician Phil Monsour. The result is a collection of poetry that touches on migration, emotion, colonialism, and of course, Palestine. Check it out and buy the album through CD Baby! We caught up with Rafeef from her home in London, England, to tell us all about it. Continue reading

Hi! Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat!

It almost feels like way too long, but this week we’ve got our regular collaborator Frank from Submedia.TV back in studio with us. Since November 29th is the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, we took the opportunity to highlight the amazing liberation movement in occupied Palestine, the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and play some music by artists who ha12299121_550361788446685_1636856390685823063_nve heeded the call to boycott Israeli apartheid. As an inspiring example, in Montreal in 2010,  500 artists signed an open statement pledging their support for Palestine. Continue reading

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! Our very special guest on the show this week is Geoff Berner, the celebrated klezmer radical and Vancouver’s own Whisky Rabbi. Geoff has a new album out now, called “We are going to Bremen to be Musicians” on Coax Records. We caught up with him on the phone from the west coast to talk about many things, including the recent Canadian election, the slow and painful deaths of Stephen Harper and Ariel Sharon, the history of klezmer music, and much more. Enjoy, dance, and celebrate!

The Rebel Beat podcast 034 – Nantali Indongo of Nomadic Massive on the Computer Riots at Concordia, Black Activism, and Hip Hop Education

Click here to download this podcast (right click ‘save link as’)

This week on the podcast, we spend the better part of an hour with the amazing Nantali Indongo (aka. I Am Blackgirl) of Nomadic Massive. Nantali was in studio to talk about a new documentary film “The Ninth Floor“, which looks at the infamous Computer Riot at Concordia University in 1969. We spoke with Nantali about her personal connection to the incident (her father was one of the main activists involved), about the legacy of the affair for the Black community of Montreal, Black youth empowerment, and of course, the new Nomadic Massive album.

Plus we also dropped a set of tunes for Palestine, where sadly Israeli apartheid and racism is raging once again. And finally, we sincerely hope that this will be the last Rebel Beat podcast to come out under the tyrannical regime of Stephen Harper in Canada (although we urge everyone to keep fighting any bullshit politician lining up to take his place). Good riddance, you schmuck. Continue reading
