Episode 092: Big Announcements for 2019

This is our last episode of the Rebel Beat for 2018, and we have some big news about the podcast as we head into 2019. Ryan Harvey of Firebrand records joins us to talk about that news, plus some of his favorite music of the year, and what it means to be a working-class musician at the dawn of 2019.

We give a special shout out to the Unist’ot’en Camp, who are on high alert as they fight a court injunction to force a pipeline through their Indigenous territory. Support them and get informed here!

The Rebel Beat 090: The Union Thugs, Music, and Direct Action

Oi! Oi! Vey!
Welcome to the latest episode of The Rebel Beat!

Straight outta the ranks of Montreal’s Wobblies, we’ve got an interview with The Union Thugs. The Union Thugs are a folk-punk band who take a page from the little red song book, and give a nod to the great working class music heroes like Woody Guthrie and Billy Bragg. The Union Thugs feel most at home playing on today’s picket lines, using their bodies and their instruments to clog the wheels of capitalism. Bosses, beware!

On our Turn It Up segment, we give a shout-out to Rihanna, who refused an offer to play at the 2019 Super Bowl in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

HAPPY MAYDAY, PROLES!! Welcome back to our weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! This week, it’s our special to honour May 1st! Celebrated all around the world by masses of workers, downtrodden, unemployed, rebels, and all of us hungry for a better world, May Day is a day to celebrate all of our struggles and resistance against capitalism, patriarchy, racism, and any other force that keeps us down.

Frank from Submedia.TV was back in studio with us for our last collaboration at CKUT! As usual, he brought in some amazing tunes to big-up workers AND non-workers struggles, and also an awesome interview on the current #NuitDebout movement in France. Continue reading

Oooohhh shit! It’s that time of year again! The trees are budding, birds are chirping, the people are rising, and Mayday is upon us. Every year, May 1st is celebrated in most parts of the world as International Workers’ Day. It’s a day to celebrate not only labour struggles, but all fights against oppression and ecocide. In many cities, there are Mayday protests and celebrations of all kinds, so wherever you are, find your nearest one, get out there in the streets, and STRIKE!

This week on the podcast, we welcome back our regular collaborator, co-conspirator, and friend, Frank of Submedia! As usual, Frank comes loaded with a wicked “fuck work” themed playlist of Mayday tunes, plus we hear an interview he did recently with Fannie and Brice from the Printemps 2015 committee in Montreal. This committee has been behind many of the amazing student strikes and actions in Quebec over the last few weeks, and they’re also gearing up for some pretty major Mayday stuff. Check ’em out!
