Episode 101: Brivele & Anti-Fascist Klezmer from Then ‘Til Now

sketch3 small

Today we’re going back in time in a way and exploring some Yiddish radical classic tunes with Brivele! Brivele is a Seattle-based anti-fascist klezmer folk-punk trio who braid together oral history, Yiddish language, contemporary and old-country musical genres, American Vaudeville, and visual arts. Check out their Bandcamp page here!

I had a chance to speak with two members of the band a while ago, Stefanie and Maia, and they talk about the lineage of this music, and why it’s just as important to be putting out anti-fascist klezmer today as it was 100 years ago.

Video of members of Brivele playing with “Yiddishists Against Prisons” in Val-David, Quebec in 2019.

Gritty: The Anti-Fascist Hockey Hero – Changing On The Fly

DpUFmGsWsAEV-pC

Hey Rebel Beat listeners!

We interrupt our regular programming to bring you another episode of Changing On The Fly, Aaron’s other podcast, that we think you’re gonna love. Check it!

How did Gritty, the new mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers, become the new mascot for the American anti-fascist movement? Gritty is a huge, ugly, scary orange monster, who comes to us at a time when there is an equally huge, ugly, scary orange monster in the White House.

We’re joined on this episode by Mark Bray, history professor & the author of “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook” to talk about Gritty, hockey, and what the antifa movement actually is. Since we’re talking about Pennsylvania and fascism, we also reflect on the recent tragic synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, and pay our respects to the victims. May their memories be for a blessing.

The Rebel Beat Se.2 Ep.6: RodStarz of Rebel Diaz

On this edition of The Rebel Beat, we bring you to the streets of The Bronx. We met up with RodStarz, one half of the prolific revolutionary hip-hop duo Rebel Diaz, at the Madres en Movimiento community space that they help to run. Surrounded by radical books, recording equipment, and movement murals, we talked about the history of hip-hop in the Bronx, community spaces (such as the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective), gentrification, and much more. The Rebel Beat Se.2 Ep.5: Oi Polloi!

American elections got you down? Then it sounds like you need a good dose of revolutionary music! Never fear, because we’re back with the latest edition of The Rebel Beat, a Firebrand Records podcast!

Our special guest on the show this week is the raging Scotish anarcho-punk
band Oi Polloi! They’ve been churning out 100% anti-fascist street-crust since 1981, and they show no signs of slowing down. Aaron caught up with them while they were in Montreal for Revolution Fest, and we’ll hear an in-depth conversation on everything from Brexit and Scotish independence, to protecting Gaelic and other Indigenous languages, to BASHING THE FASH! Welcome back for another weekly edition of The Rebel Beat! This week it’s our favourite time of the month, that time when Frank from Sumedia.tv comes in to studio to share what’s been going down on his TV show, and play some wicked riotous tunes.

This week, we have an interview with Austin, TX-based anarchist organizer and author Scott Crow, talking about the shit-show that is the US election circus. We also talked about recent global anti-fascist and feminist actions against Pegida and Roosh V (a so-called “Pick-Up Artists” who supports the legalization of rape). And, because the WHOLE WORLD was talking about it, we threw in a bit of Super Bowl 50 commentary. But don’t worry, just a bit 😉

And of course, plenty of revolutionary music. See the amazing playlist below! Continue reading

Lace up your boots, my friends, dust off your brass knuckles, and get ready for another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! This week on the show, we laid down a raucous, at times brutal, at times folky, antifascist music set. This is in following with our previous discussions on the unfolding refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East, the response of fascist governments and their shock troops in several countries, but also on the heroic solidarity of anti-fascist militants, not to mention the bravery of the migrants themselves.

But we also look at the recent mobilizations against the xenophobic neo-nazi scumbags of Pegida in Toronto and Montreal. In both cities, anti-fascist and anti-racist protestors sent those Pegida bottom-feeders running scared! Continue reading
