Episode 101: Brivele & Anti-Fascist Klezmer from Then ‘Til Now

sketch3 small

Today we’re going back in time in a way and exploring some Yiddish radical classic tunes with Brivele! Brivele is a Seattle-based anti-fascist klezmer folk-punk trio who braid together oral history, Yiddish language, contemporary and old-country musical genres, American Vaudeville, and visual arts. Check out their Bandcamp page here!

I had a chance to speak with two members of the band a while ago, Stefanie and Maia, and they talk about the lineage of this music, and why it’s just as important to be putting out anti-fascist klezmer today as it was 100 years ago.

Video of members of Brivele playing with “Yiddishists Against Prisons” in Val-David, Quebec in 2019.

After 100 episodes of The Rebel Beat, we selected our top 5! Read the post on our website here.

Gritty: The Anti-Fascist Hockey Hero – Changing On The Fly

DpUFmGsWsAEV-pC

Hey Rebel Beat listeners!

We interrupt our regular programming to bring you another episode of Changing On The Fly, Aaron’s other podcast, that we think you’re gonna love. Check it!

How did Gritty, the new mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers, become the new mascot for the American anti-fascist movement? Gritty is a huge, ugly, scary orange monster, who comes to us at a time when there is an equally huge, ugly, scary orange monster in the White House.

We’re joined on this episode by Mark Bray, history professor & the author of “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook” to talk about Gritty, hockey, and what the antifa movement actually is. Since we’re talking about Pennsylvania and fascism, we also reflect on the recent tragic synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, and pay our respects to the victims. May their memories be for a blessing.

The Rebel Beat Se2 Ep10 – Alas Spits Decolonizing Fire

Welcome back to the latest edition of The Rebel Beat!

Our special guest this month is Alas. Alas is an MC who is consistently spitting out pure revolutionary fire, and when she’s not on the mic, you can probably find her on the front lines of the struggle to decolonize Turtle Island. You might already be familiar with her work with Savage Fam, who we’ve also interviewed on this show, and we had a chance to talk to her about the time she spent at Standing Rock in so-called North Dakota last winter. Check out her Bandcamp page!

Also, if you like this show, please support it! The podcast is free, it always will be, but if you wanna support revolutionary music being pumped into your ears and podcast apps every month, please consider throwing us a 1 or 2 bucks per episode. You can support us on our Patreon page: www.patreon.com/rebelbeatradio

Or if you want to make a one-time donation, we’ve got a big Paypal button at the top of our website, which you can find at rebelbeatradio.com.

For our Turn It Up segment, we look at 2 very different but very important struggles:

-The battle to save Radio Centre-Ville, a long-running multi-lingual community radio station in Montreal. To find out more, visit:
www.facebook.com/frauderadiocentreville/

-The “Battle of Berkley” on April 15, when anti-fascists confronted neo-nazis, fascists, and other Trump supporters in the Bay area. For more info and reporting, visit:

Lace up your boots, my friends, dust off your brass knuckles, and get ready for another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! This week on the show, we laid down a raucous, at times brutal, at times folky, antifascist music set. This is in following with our previous discussions on the unfolding refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East, the response of fascist governments and their shock troops in several countries, but also on the heroic solidarity of anti-fascist militants, not to mention the bravery of the migrants themselves.

But we also look at the recent mobilizations against the xenophobic neo-nazi scumbags of Pegida in Toronto and Montreal. In both cities, anti-fascist and anti-racist protestors sent those Pegida bottom-feeders running scared! Continue reading
