This week on the show, our special guest is Drezus (aka. Jeremiah Manitopyes), a Plains Cree Indigenous MC based out of Calgary. We spoke about his life, his family, his music, and some of the most pressing issues facing Indigenous communities today. Continue reading

Hailing from the Samson Cree First Nation in Alberta, but now calling Winnipeg his home, HellnBack is a veteran on the hip-hop scene, some even calling him the “Grandfather of Native hip-hop”. He was an early member of 90s rap groups War Party and Team Rezofficial, before finally setting in on a solo career. His latest album is called F.O.E.=Family Over Everything, and we talked with HellnBack about his long career in the game, the importance of family, and using hip-cover170x170hop as a tool of resistance to fight back against suicide and depression. In Montreal, this will be the 20th year in a row that peeps will be taking to the streets to fight back against the daily violence that so many face at the hands of the pigs. To celebrate this resistance, we’ve got 2 hours of music here that loudly proclaims we’re still not lovin’ police. Never have, never will. Continue reading

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! This week on the show, we start off with some ideal tracks that we’d love to have blaring over a loudspeaker during a riot, and then we went into a musical obituary for Vi Subversa. Vi Subversa was the lead singer of the UK anarcho-punk band Poison Girls, and she sadly passed away last week at the age of 80. Rest in power! Continue reading

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! Our apologies it’s been over a week since the last podcast came out, but we’ve got a few more ready to be released ASAP!

This week, we bring you an amazing interview with the bombastically radical MC of The Coup, Boots Riley, done by the equally bombastic Dave Zirin of Edge of Sports. The interview was recorded at the Politics and Prose bookshop in Washington, DC, and boots_cover_full_rnd17-frontdistributed by the ever-amazing Making Contact radio program. A fascinating and exciting listen. Do be sure to check out Boots’ recently-published book “Tell Homeland Security – We are the Bomb“.

Plus, as always, tons of great music here, spanning afrobeat, hip-hop, and punk rock, all with that class war edge.

Enjoy! Continue reading

Welcome back for another weekly edition of The Rebel Beat! This week it’s our favourite time of the month, that time when Frank from Sumedia.tv comes in to studio to share what’s been going down on his TV show, and play some wicked riotous tunes.

This week, we have an interview with Austin, TX-based anarchist organizer and author Scott Crow, talking about the shit-show that is the US election circus. We also talked about recent global anti-fascist and feminist actions against Pegida and Roosh V (a so-called “Pick-Up Artists” who supports the legalization of rape). And, because the WHOLE WORLD was talking about it, we threw in a bit of Super Bowl 50 commentary. But don’t worry, just a bit 😉

And of course, plenty of revolutionary music. See the amazing playlist below! Continue reading

Welcome back to another weekly edition of The Rebel Beat! Well, this week marks exactly 1 year that we’ve been producing this radio show at CKUT. So… happy fuckin’ birthday to us! Let’s give a HUGE shout-out to all the amazing bands, artists, and activists we’ve had on the show, as well as to our mothership, CKUT – truly the best community radio station on the planet.

Getting down to business, February is of course Black History Month. Here at the Rebel Beat, we recognize the complexity of this month, being only a month, and how reductive that can be. Yet at the same time, we think it’s an important opportunity to highlight some key ongoing and historical trends in Black community resistance and art. Continue reading

The Rebel Beat Podcast 046 – Rafeef Ziadah on teaching life and liberation

Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! This week, we are thrilled to bring you one of the fiercest poetic voices of the Palestinian liberation movement – Rafeef Ziadah. Rafeef is a Palestinian refugee who has committed her life’s work to the liberation of her people. She is a leading organizer in the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israeli apartheid.

I actually met Rafeef for the first time ever at the conference to launch the BDS movement in Canada in Toronto in 2006. She is a powerful and energetic orator, which usually makes for a badass organizer.

On top of her day-to-day activism, Rafeef is also an amazing poet and spoken word artist. She recently released her second full-length album, “We Teach Life“, which once again beautifully combines her political poetry with music. On this album, she teamed up with Australian-Palestinian musician Phil Monsour. The result is a collection of poetry that touches on migration, emotion, colonialism, and of course, Palestine. Check it out and buy the album through CD Baby! We caught up with Rafeef from her home in London, England, to tell us all about it. Continue reading
