Episode 95 – Josh MacPhee’s Encyclopedia of Political Record Labels

MacPhee-Josh-432x432

Josh MacPhee does beautiful art. He is a member of the Justseeds collective, and if you love their work, you might have some of his prints up on your wall. In recent years, Josh has turned his focus from visual art and graphic design to revolutionary music, and he is the author of the forthcoming book “An Encyclopedia of Political Record Labels” from Common Notions Press. The book is a glorious work of deep research and stunning design. He joins us on the Rebel Beat to dive deep into his book, and the propaganda potential of record labels.

In our Turn It Up segment, we give a nod to Egyptian rebel musician Ramy Essam, who is fighting to get many of his band-mates and artistic collaborators out of jail. Find out all about the campaign around his song “Balaha” here.

The Rebel Beat Se2 Ep8: Sundus Abdul Hadi – We Are The Medium

Welcome to our monthly edition of The Rebel Beat podcast for February 2017!

We are your monthly dose of revolution radio, anthems, hymns, and beats to put up a wall of sound against racism, Islamophobia, borders, and the orange menace.

We have a first on The Rebel Beat this month! I interviewed a visual artist for the first time – usually I just interview musicians. But we’re going to be hearing from Sundus Abdul Hadi, a brilliant Iraqi-Canadian artist based in Montreal, and member of We Are the Medium, an amazing platform and collective of multi-media artists of colour. We talked about everything from the urgency of our times, to art, to self-care. Plus, Sundus has an open call for submissions for an upcoming exhibit she’s curating called “Take Care of Yourself”. Check it here!

On the show, we also bring you some Firebrand Records news, and bring you an exclusive new track from Ryan Harvey, Kareem Samara, and Shireen! The tune is a hauntingly powerful homage to the Egyptian revolution.

And finally, in our Turn It Up segment, we look at the Tribe Called Quest performance at the Grammy Awards, where busted through a border wall with Busta Rhymes in defiance of the Trump Muslim Ban.

Boom! Welcome back to another weekly edition of The Rebel Beat! Just a reminder that in a few weeks, we sadly won’t be doing this on a weekly basis any more, so if you haven’t subscribed to the podcast yet, do it now on iTunes or Stitcher! And, no matter where you subscribe, be sure to leave us a review and rating!

This week on the program, we bring you an overview of the annual Howl Arts Festival in Montreal. If you’re not familiar with the Howl Arts collective, they are a grouping of radical activists and artists in Montreal, trying to bridge the divides between culture and social movements. Not only do they put on amazing concerts and release amazing music, but they also organize interventions where artists speak out against gentrification, austerity, and police brutality. All said, we have a lot affinity with them here at The Rebel Beat. Continue reading

Meet the Graphic Designer Behind The Rebel Beat – Kevin Lo of Loki Design

Kevin LoIn my humble opinion, Kevin Lo is one of the best radical graphic designers in North America these days. The man behind Loki Design also designed the logo and art for this show, The Rebel Beat. But people have been seeing his designs and art up around phone polls, at demos, in zines, and in galleries across Montreal for years. Check out this awesome interview with Kevin below, done by our friends at Free City Radio.
