The Rebel Beat Se2 Ep9: Dave Zirin and the Music at the Edge of Sports

Boom!

Welcome back to another monthly episode of The Rebel Beat, a Firebrand Records podcast, and your spot for class war on the dance floor.

Our special guest this month is none other than Dave Zirin, author and host of the Edge of Sports podcast. Dave’s work delves into the fascinating collisions between sports and politics, and his work is incredibly inspiring for activists, sports fans, and activist sports fans! But importantly, Dave is also a huge lover of music, and that love really comes across in the podcast. He was in Montreal last month for an event, and we sat down for an interview over bagels, lox, and plenty of coffee.

Fiver

One downside of only publishing the Rebel Beat podcast once per month is that I feel there is just TOO MUCH GOOD RADICAL MUSIC OUT THERE to fit onto a monthly show! So this is a bit of an attempt to bring together some things I’ve been listening to lately – all artists that I hope we’ll feature as guests on the podcasts some day, and albums you should check out. So hope you enjoy this video mixtape!

Fiver – Audible Songs from Rockwood

Fiver is the solo project moniker of Simone Schmidt, a gifted songwriter, ex lead singer of One Hundred Dollars, and also a dear friend of mine. For her upcoming album, due out in April, Simone spent years doing research in the Ontario archives about women who were locked up in the Rockwood asylum in the 1800s. The result is a beautiful collection of songs based on some of the real stories of women who were incarcerated there. If you want to hear a great interview with Simone, as well as teasers for some of the songs, check out this recent episode of The Imposter podcast. And here’s a great little mini-doc about the album!

Narcy – World War Free

To me, Montreal’s very own Narcy can do no wrong. In a climate of heightened xenophobia and racism against refugees, this video couldn’t have come any sooner.

The Rebel Beat Se2 Ep8: Sundus Abdul Hadi – We Are The Medium

Welcome to our monthly edition of The Rebel Beat podcast for February 2017!

We are your monthly dose of revolution radio, anthems, hymns, and beats to put up a wall of sound against racism, Islamophobia, borders, and the orange menace.

We have a first on The Rebel Beat this month! I interviewed a visual artist for the first time – usually I just interview musicians. But we’re going to be hearing from Sundus Abdul Hadi, a brilliant Iraqi-Canadian artist based in Montreal, and member of We Are the Medium, an amazing platform and collective of multi-media artists of colour. We talked about everything from the urgency of our times, to art, to self-care. Plus, Sundus has an open call for submissions for an upcoming exhibit she’s curating called “Take Care of Yourself”. Check it here!

On the show, we also bring you some Firebrand Records news, and bring you an exclusive new track from Ryan Harvey, Kareem Samara, and Shireen! The tune is a hauntingly powerful homage to the Egyptian revolution.

And finally, in our Turn It Up segment, we look at the Tribe Called Quest performance at the Grammy Awards, where busted through a border wall with Busta Rhymes in defiance of the Trump Muslim Ban.
