Episode 104: A People’s History of Godspeed You! Black Emperor (part 1)

For the last quarter-century, Godspeed You! Black Emperor have been putting out epic, orchestral, anarchistic rock music. Their albums and legendary live performances have fuelled radical social movements in their hometown of Montreal, and all around the world. To celebrate the release of the band’s latest album G_d’s Pee at State’s End!, The Rebel Beat is doing a 2-part people’s history of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This first episode features a conversation between host Aaron Lakoff, anarchist graphic designer Kevin Lo, and Sharmeen Khan of No One Is Illegal Toronto and Upping The Anti. We examine how the band’s music has been interwoven with some of the greatest moments of social upheaval of our time, from the protests against the war in Iraq, to the massive Quebec student strike of 2012, to the current pandemic.

Part 2 will feature an in-depth discussion with Efrim Manuel Menuck from the band. Coming soon.

On this month’s show, we bring you into the studio and into the mind of the legendary Abenaki Indigenous musician and filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin. Alanis is 85 years young, and has a prolific career with over 50 documentaries under her belt. But while many know her as an inspiring documentarian, fewer knew her as a musician. Until now.

Her album Bush Lady, originally recorded at CBC in the 80s, was just re-issued this year on Constellation Records, and we got a chance to have an intimate and emotional conversation about this brilliant work.

On the show this week, we are pleased to bring you an interview with Matana Roberts! Matana is an internationally renowned composer, band leader, saxophonist, sound experimentalist and mixed-media practitioner. She just put out her new album “Coin Coin Chapter 3: River Run Thee” on the ever-rad Constellation Records (the label of bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Silver Mount Zion).

Matana first caught our attention while she was spending lots of time in Montreal and recent years, and playing several benefit shows for Artists Against Apartheid and the Howl arts collective. She often is making powerful political statement through her music on many different issues, most notably recently with the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

We got to speak to Matana about her new album, identity, lineage, and more. Tune in this Wednesday, March 18 from 10pm-12am on CKUT radio to hear it!
