Welcome back to another weekly podcast of The Rebel Beat! This week, we bring you a feature conversation with Matana Roberts. Matana is a NYC-based, internationally renowned composer, band leader, saxophonist, sound experimentalist and mixed-media practitioner. In February, she released her latest album, “Coin Coin Chapter 3: River Run Thee” on Constellation Records.
We spoke with Matana about her musical process, which she refers to as “panoramic sound quilting”, as well as race, identity, and history. In the second half of the show, we played the majority of her recent piece Black lives matter/All lives matter, recorded in Brooklyn last December, and focusing on the militarization of police forces in the USA.
Plus brand new music this week from Blackbird Raum and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Enjoy!
